Telling Tales is a surrealist experience, told through the lens of traditional storytelling, that explores the problematic ideas contained in fairy tales. It uses well known characters to surface what fairy tales reveal about our latent emotions. A children’s play strictly for adults, the piece questions what we teach the young and how such stories shape our view of danger for the rest of our lives.
This piece was in collaboration with Jeanelie Louamba.
In this peace we invited up to 3 audience members per group to be tucked into bed together, get as comfortable as possible on a hard wooden bed in a dimly lit room. With a lady in the corner, staring at them, and they would be read a typical Brother Grimm story. One with grotesque characters doing questionable things for questionable moral reasons. Once found in this situation, with no way of escaping, surely one would become much more aware of the chilling metaphors hidden in children's stories.
